Willie Baptist was interviewed as a part of the Ford Foundation’s #InequalityIs project.

The Peace and Justice Center is honored to list guest speaker Willie Baptist as part of our Barbara Sabol Memorial Lecture series. He is a scholar-in-residence at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and has more than 40 years of experience organizing among the poor. He has recently co-authored a book on education and the building of social movements: Pedagogy of the Poor.…

Nancy Frey, recipient of 2013 David Frey Community Service for Peace Award

Nancy Frey picture 2For more than three decades, Nancy Frey has volunteered for and worked with a wide range
of community organizations that share the goals of social justice and improving conditions for  people facing discrimination and economic hardships.

Nancy Frey was born in Wilkes-Barre, and moved at an early age with her family to upstate New  York, Baltimore and finally to North Carolina.

She returned to Wilkes-Barre to attend Wilkes College, where she met and later married David
Frey. Thus began a four decade partnership, which included teaching in New Jersey, studying
and working in Stuttgart, Germany, launching an organic farm in Nanticoke, and becoming
founding members of the Farmers’ Market on Wilkes-Barre’s Public Square.…

She currently serves on the Ethics Commission subcommittee of the Home Rule Transition Committee, and last year worked diligently on the Ethics Awareness Initiative of the Ethics Institute of Northeast PA.…

Naed Smith, recipient of this years Susan Merrill Constance Kozel Award!

The Peace and Justice Center would like to honor Naed Smith with the Constance Kozel Award for her contribution to society. A native of Wilkes-Barre and resident of Harrisburg, Edward “Ned” Smith is well known in both cities for his decades-long efforts to promote peace and build community. 

Presently, Smith serves as the host of the St. Martin de Porres Catholic Worker House, an intentional community that practices voluntary poverty as it addresses the spiritual and material needs of an economically poor neighborhood only a mile from the state’s Capitol building. …
